When Things Get Worse Before They Get Better [Exodus 5:1-6:1]

Moses’ initial efforts only increased Pharoah’s narcissistic rage and the Israelites’ horrific conditions. When things get worse before they get better, we must hold on to God’s promises.

KEY IDEA

Adversity and hardship is NOT a sign God has forgotten or rejected you! It may actually be the opposite. Adversity builds character, including endurance, and allows God’s glory and His power to be displayed. Trust Him in these moments, and lean into the faithfulness of His Word to you.

ADVERSITY COMES TO GOD’S SERVANTS

Pharoah rejects the demand of God, claiming He doesn’t know the LORD and He doesn’t need to do what He says. (v. 1-2)

Moses warns of God’s wrath if He is not obeyed; Pharoah retaliates with his own wrath upon God’s people. The burden gets heavier. (vv. 3-19)

The leaders of Israel confront Moses and Aaron with this hardship, blaming them and asking God to judge Moses and Aaron for the difficulty brought to their lives. (vv. 20-21)

Moses cries out to God, doubting the process and his own call, claiming he has caused nothing but trouble for those he was sent to help. (vv. 22-23)

God reminds Moses that His own reputation is at stake, and His power will now be displayed. (6:1)

WHAT ABOUT US?

Our world is not “Christian,” so we should not be surprised when they reject the Word of God. (1 Corinthians 2:14)

When persecution, hardship, adversity, difficulty, opposition, etc. come our way, don’t be shocked. God teaches us endurance, clarifies our priorities, and requires us to depend on Him. (James 1:2-4)

God also uses these moments to remind us HE ALONE is God! He displays His glory, power, and wisdom...but in His timing and in the manner He knows best. (Ezekiel 39:21-22)

We must remember His Words of promise and walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)
