When A Plan Comes Together [Nehemiah 2:1-20]
Nehemiah risked his comfort to evaluate the work required to reestablish the people of God. When God puts a plan together, we see how He uses people and processes to accomplish something great.
KEY IDEA
God has a plan for your (and our) life! (Ephesians 2:10)
He will orchestrate the circumstances, timing, and results for His glory and our good.
We must be alert to opportunities, pray for divine wisdom, and respond with action grounded in planning, evaluation, and preparation.
THE CHALLENGE
God’s opportunity was not immediate to Nehemiah’s initial prayer. (2:1)
God moved in the King’s heart to first see the need in Nehemiah’s life and then to offer him the opportunity to handle it. (2:2-6)
Nehemiah, when overwhelmed with fear, took the matter again to God in prayer. (2:2-4)
He offered the credibility of his own life to “back up” his request for time away. (2:5)
He suggested a plan of action. (2:5-6)
He boldly asked for protection and provision, based on two things: the favor of the King and the gracious hand of God. (2:7-8).
The blessing to live out God’s plan in His life did not keep Nehemiah from dealing with opposition and obstacles. (2:9-10)
THE OPPORTUNITY
Nehemiah assessed the needs by inspecting the broken down walls and gates that had been destroyed by fire. (2:11-15)
He processed the information privately as he discerned from God what needed to be done. (2:16)
He presented the need with hope, pointed them to God, and motivated them with the partners and vision God had given him. (2:17-18)
He rallied the people, and was steadfast in dealing with conflict. (2:19-20)
SO WHAT?!
Read the circumstances, but leave the timing to the Lord. (2:1)
Be bold in approaching God with our requests, but also bold in living out the opportunity when it presents itself. (1:11, 2:4-6)
Rely on God to give you the vision and insight you need to face your opportunity. (2:11-17)
Expect, and stand up to, opposition. (2:10, 19-20)
Get God’s people on board; no one can rebuild the ruins of life alone. (2:17-18)
